Beantown sports aren’t the only thing in this town winning awards. The South Boston enoteca (wine bar for you plebs) Fox & The Knife, the latest venture from local chef extraordinaire and James Beard Award winner Karen Akunowicz, named a Best New Restaurant by Food & Wine magazine, is the first and only New England eatery on the magazine’s ranked list.

Traditionally inspired handmade pastas, a carefully selected wine and spirits list, and plenty of pedigree from Boston’s culinary circles make The Fox & The Knife one of the hottest spots in town, an impressive feat considering the doors opened in February 2019. Located at 28 West Broadway St. in South Boston, the restaurant’s cozy interior fits around 80 guests comfortably beneath the soft glow of a neon pink “stay foxy” sign above the bar. The curated apertivo, vermouth, and amaro list highlights some of the most innovative and well-crafted spirit designers in the craft game.

Cutting her teeth for seven years as executive chef at Myers + Chang and a contestant on Top Chef: California, Akunowicz spent her formative years in Modena, a cultural and gastronomic hub of northern Italy. Expect mouthwatering dishes like spaghetti con vongole and tagliatelle bolognese. Heartier dishes like pollo al mt tone and the whole red snapper are sure to please even the most critical foodies.

Despite the limelight and nightly rush of adoring fans, the ever confident Akunowicz, with her noticeable blast of electric pink hair, and her team smoothly navigate the waters of hungry guests with grace and charm. Be sure to make reservations and bring an appetite for some of the most creative yet traditional takes on a European mother cuisine.
