Goal Madness

March is here and whether you’re a basketball fan or not, you’ve heard of March Madness. Only the teams that have been selected as the best in college basketball are invited to participate. This is the event these athletes have been training for. This is the opportunity theseteams have been chasing all season long. Fighting for the chance to win the championship and be crowned the best team in the nation.

I remember this very well. The anticipation. The hype and excitement. If you’re not into playing the sport though or watching basketball on TV, you might still get hooked into filling out a March Madness bracket. Millions of people every year pick which teams they believe will win each game prior to the matches taking place. All over the city and country, people fill out the NCAA March Madness brackets and compete to see who gets closest to the most accurate predictions. It almost can seem there is no way to escape the “madness.”

It’s March now and 2019 is well underway. It can seem at times that the year is getting away from us. Those goals you made at New Year’s Eve may not have set in and become part of your lifestyle as much as you had hoped. Every day is a new opportunity to start something new, to end a current behavior, or change your life in some way, big or small.

Two months ago, we were celebrating the end to one year and the start of another. This month, all but one college basketball team will end their season with a loss. The basketball season that the athletes and coaches have been training and working so hard for will be over. But with the end of one season comes an opportunity to start something new. The ability to take count of our past experiences, losses, and wins. The chance to regroup and step forward in a new direction. Maybe it’s nothing more than a minor shift in our awareness and attention, but the chance to take aim at a new goal without hesitation. If you’re disappointed in how your New Year’s resolutions have progressed, or if you’re just looking to make a change in your life, I encourage you to make strides toward your goals now. You don’t need an excuse or reason. You don’t need a new year. All you need is to make a choice for yourself. It doesn’t have to be anything special or at a special time.

Today is special enough. You’re special enough. Make a change, do something new, treat yourself special—starting now.
