San Diego, CA—The first cannabis competition where everyone starts with genetically identical plants is coming to California. Dubbed the “Iron Chef of weed,” The Grow-Off claims to be the first entirely objective test of skill, where final results are measured by the latest in scientific testing and not judging panels.
"This is an apples to apples, no excuses challenge," said Jake Browne, co-founder of The Grow-Off and cannabis critic for The Denver Post. “We’ve been overwhelmed by the response we’ve had from Colorado growers and can’t wait to see what California can do. This event is all about them, not getting 20,000 people high.”
Nearly doubling in size since their Denver launch in 2016, The Grow-Off currently has 73 medical marijuana companies competing across Colorado, making it the largest event of its kind in the state. In its inaugural run, the business gave away $15,000 in cash prizes to winners in categories like potency, flavor, and yield. Partnering with Sensi Magazine, their goal is to find 100 growers in southern California and start giving away plants by mid-July.

Working only with state-registered businesses, The Grow-Off prides itself on being compliant with local and state rules instead of looking for gray areas to exploit. With regulation fast approaching in The Golden State, organizers have shortened the timeframe from the usual six months to only five but are confident that cultivators are up to the challenge.
“As someone who started in dispensaries back in 2009—before regulation here in Colorado—I know there are definitely people who are going to drop out of the system and do their own thing,” said Browne. “We wanted to give them a chance to compete.”
